چکیده

In this work we investigate numerically the dynamics of sheared suspensions in the limit of vanishingly small fluid and particle inertia. The numerical model we used is able to handle the multi-body hydrodynamic interactions between thousands of particles embedded in a linear shear flow. The presence of the particles is modelled by momentum source terms spread out on a spherical envelop forcing the Stokes equations of the creeping flow. Therefore all the velocity perturbations induced by the moving particles are simultaneously accounted for. The statistical properties of the sheared suspensions are related to the velocity fluctuation of the particles. We formed averages for the resulting velocity fluctuation and rotation rate tensors. We found that the latter are highly anisotropic and that all the velocity fluctuation terms grow linearly with particle volume fraction. Only one off-diagonal term is found to be non zero (clearly related to trajectory symmetry breaking induced by the non-hydrodynamic repulsion force). We also found a strong correlation of positive/negative velocities in the shear plane, on a time scale controlled by the shear rate (direct interaction of two particles). The time scale required to restore uncorrelated velocity fluctuations decreases continuously as the concentration increases. We calculated the shear induced self-diffusion coefficients using two different methods and the resulting diffusion tensor appears to be anisotropic too. The microstructure of the suspension is found to be drastically modified by particle interactions. First, the probability density function of velocity fluctuations showed a transition from exponential to Gaussian behaviour as particle concentration varies. Second, the probability of finding close pairs while the particles move under shear flow is strongly enhanced by hydrodynamic interactions when the concentration increases.

Dynamic structure factor study of diffusion in strongly sheared suspensions

Diffusion of neutrally buoyant spherical particles in concentrated monodisperse suspensions under simple shear flow is investigated. We consider the case of nonBrownian particles in Stokes flow, which corresponds to the limits of infinite Péclet number and zero Reynolds number. Using an approach based upon ideas of dynamic light scattering we compute selfand gradient diffusion coefficients in t...

Layering in sedimentation of suspensions of charged colloids: simulation and theory.

We study the equilibrium sediment of a multicomponent system of charged colloids using primitive model Monte Carlo simulations, which include counterions explicitly. We find separation of the different colloidal components into almost pure layers, where colloids with large charge-to-mass ratio sediment higher in the sample. This effect appears due to a competition between ionic entropy, gravita...

Similarities in the Dynamics of Suspensions of Mo no disperse Colloidal Chains with Different Lengths Confined in the Thin Films

We perform the extensive Brownian dynamics simulations on the suspensions of the monodisperse magnetic colloidal chains confined in the thin films at several different area fractions. It is shown that the long-time self-diffusion coefficients of the colloidal chains with different chain lengths converge on the single master curve, even though the area fraction of the chains is different. We als...

A new model system for diffusion NMR studies of concentrated monodisperse and bidisperse colloids.

A method to prepare monodisperse and simultaneously NMR-visible and fluorescent colloidal particles is described, and a systematic approach to obtain spectrally resolved diffusion coefficient for every component in a monodisperse colloidal suspension is presented. We also prepared bidisperse colloidal suspensions, where each colloid component has a distinct NMR spectral signature, and obtained ...

Nonequilibrium structure and rheology of concentrated colloidal suspensions: Linear response

We propose a simple theory for the pair distribution function of a sheared colloidal suspension. The starting point is an exact equation for the stationary state pair distribution. We assume that in a shear flow the higher order distributions can be expressed through the pair distribution in the same way as in an equilibrium state. To get explicit results we use a simple decoupling approximatio...
